Wood Memorial delayed as Aqueduct shuts until at least April 5
No, not yet racing fans.
The New York Racing Association (NYRA) announced Wednesday that live racing at Aqueduct will be suspended through at least April 5 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Wood Memorial, New York’s premier Kentucky Derby prep and the biggest day on the Aqueduct calendar was slated for April 4. The Wood will be postponed to a date to be determined.
“While this decision is necessary NYRA is working hard to determine when we can return to racing while prioritizing the health and well-being of everyone involved in our operations,” NYRA CEO and President Dave O’Rourke said .
With the Kentucky Derby moved from the first Saturday in May to the first Saturday in September, there obviously is no rush to run the Wood. If the new timetable holds, the Travers, Saratoga Race Course’s midsummer derby, may end up being the biggest prep race on the road to the Derby. The Florida Derby is still scheduled for this Saturday.
