The Giants are about to have an old-fashioned quarterback competition – and inevitably a controversy – in training camp this summer, and there’s a good chance Manning is going to get the rug pulled out from under him at some point.
“Shurmur clearly left door open for training camp competition at the QB position,” Francesa tweeted on Wednesday morning. “Doubt he misspoke.”
Here’s what Shurmur said following the Giants’ organized team activity practice on Tuesday at the team facility in East Rutherford: “I think we’re going to play the very best player. know we’re dancing around the words there. Eli is getting ready to have a great year and Daniel is getting ready to play. We’ll see what happens with it.”
Shurmur eventually called Manning the starter when pressed further by reporters. But it’s very hard to not read into what he said and couple his words with how Jones, the No. 6 pick in this year’s NFL draft, has looked good so far during the Giants’ offseason program.
“I think Daniel has had a really good offseason. He’s on track, with the goal of being ready to play Week 1. The quarterback stuff will be on the front-burner for everyone, but he’s on track,” Shurmur said as well, later adding, “The players that give our team the best chance to win play. That’s period. We’ve seen Eli do that for a very long time, so we’ll see what happens as we go down the road.”
