Watch this 1000-HP Subaru Brat crush a quarter-mile run
The Subaru Brat was a quirky 4×4 Ute sold in the ’70s and ’80s known for its interesting looks, unique body style, and rear-facing jump seats. It was never particularly fast in-period, but that hasn’t stopped one owner from taking their Brat to the absolute limit on the drag strip.
This Brat (known as the Brumby in Australia), is packing a turbocharged 2.5-liter Subaru EJ25 engine running on methanol. According to Engine Swap Depot, it sends power to the rear wheels via a Powerglide two-speed automatic transmission and a Ford nine-inch rear end.
Despite the four-figure horsepower number, it looked surprisingly tame as it ran down the strip at Willowbank Raceway in Queensland, Australia, setting a time of 7.80 seconds at 171 mph. According to Drag Import Media on Facebook, that makes it the quickest EJ25-powered car in the world. If you want a better sense of the power, check out this dyno video of the pickup, and make sure to turn the sound up:
