Watch Pro Drifters Compete for Tire Smoke Supremacy in the New 2020 Toyota Supra

You’ve probably played a game of HORSE or two in your day, but never like this. Toyota has swapped the basketball for something far more powerful: the 2020 Toyota GR Supra. Rather, two of them, one red and one black, piloted by world-renowned Formula Drift drivers Ken Gushi and Fredric Aasbø. The skilled sliders met up for a friendly game of HORSEpower, each completing tricky moves to measure the car’s—and their own—speed, precision, and balance. Ryan Tuerck, fellow pro driver and host of Drift This, was on hand to preside over the competition on the skidpad at Willow Springs International Raceway.

Team Toyota thought up some clever stunts to push the cars and their drivers to their limits. First up, Gushi and Aasbø raced to set off a smoke alarm by positioning their cars perfectly upwind and holding a steady burnout. After that, they were told to turn tight, precise donuts inside a box to see who could spin six the quickest. Next, each had to whack open a piñata with a rear tow hitch-mounted bat, then hop out to find a distinctly inedible goodie hidden inside. Referee Tuerck even gets behind the wheel for a stint to challenge Gushi and Aasbø’s internal G-meters.

The Supra’s tunability and rear-drive balance have long made it a favorite in high-level drift racing. Deliveries of the hotly-anticipated Mk V generation are only just beginning, but from our initial drives and familial comparisons, it seems to carry the traits that made its predecessors so popular in the aftermarket. We can’t wait to see how far sideways pros like Gushi and Aasbø can get it in the years to come.
