The Daniel Jones-Jason Garrett bond is already forming

MOBILE, Ala. — Jason Garrett has already spoken with Daniel Jones and is more than excited to get to work with him.

There is almost always a link between an offensive coordinator and his starting quarterback, and soon enough, the bond that was initiated by that first phone call will grow into something the Giants hope will benefit the player and the team.

Jones received a solid foundation as an NFL novice in 2019, as former coach Pat Shurmur is known to work well with young quarterbacks and navigated Jones through what was a successful rookie year, in terms of his own development. New Giants coach Joe Judge will direct and guide all areas of the team and not concentrate on offense, defense or his specialty, special teams — delegating to his coordinators in all three phases. Judge will work closely with Jones, but not as closely as Jones will work with Garrett and newly hired quarterbacks coach Jerry Schuplinski.

“Look, it’s a quarterback-driven league,’’ Judge said, responding to how an alliance with Garrett will help Jones, “so someone who’s worked successfully with multiple quarterbacks and had developed them over time, who has vast knowledge himself as a player in this league in different systems under different coordinators and playing with other great players, that’s definitely something that’s going to add to this organization and this offense.’’

Judge did not mention Jones by name during his Jan. 9 introductory press conference. Judge 13 days later again did not engage in assessing the quarterback he inherits, who is tasked with turning the team into a winner.

Judge said on Wednesday he has spoken with “a number of our players’’ and acknowledged he has additional players to contact, with some of them “on vacation or out of pocket.’’ Figure Jones was not difficult to get in touch with and that the seeds of a relationship are planted.

“I don’t want to go specifically through who I have or haven’t,’’ Judge said. “I’ve had a number of players walk into my office and be able to sit down and have conversations, which has been a great experience. There are a lot of guys who stay in the area. I think that’s a benefit of being in the New York area. They don’t have to leave to get out of town in the offseason. They may want to get some sunshine at some point in the winter, catch a little bit of break, but ultimately they’re back in New York. They stay local, and I think that’s a great advantage for us.’’

Though he said, “I definitely appreciate the question’’ when asked to evaluate Jones, there is no baiting Judge on this. He said he has made “initial evaluations’’ on the Giants players, but there is much work to be done and thus there will be no analysis emanating from him.

“I’m not going to make any public evaluations on these guys right now,’’ he said. “To be honest with you, after watching them, I’m very excited about working with our team. I was excited before I saw them and I’m even more excited now. Part of it is evaluating what you need to fix, what you need to adjust, and that’s what we’re looking at right now as coaches on how we can build this system to immediately build this foundation and move forward with these guys.’’

Garrett this week intermingled with his new colleagues, making for a somewhat startling sight as he looked at players at the Senior Bowl, mixing in a hotel lobby with Giants general manager Dave Gettleman. For more than a decade, Garrett with the Cowboys worked to beat the Giants, an NFC East rival, and just like that, he is one of them. This is somewhat of a return for Garrett, though, as he was the Giants’ backup quarterback for four years (2000-03) and has many family and friends in the New Jersey area from his time at Princeton.

Judge knew Garrett is popular with Giants ownership and with Gettleman, but no one forced Garrett on Judge. He made the call. Garrett was a positive influence on Tony Romo and Dak Prescott. Daniel Jones now has new football people in his ear.
