A Texas man killed three apparent home invaders with a shotgun, authorities said.
Two men living in a trailer in the Houston suburb of Channelview heard a commotion outside the residence early Monday, prompting one of them to grab a shotgun, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez told reporters during a press conference.
“He saw several males dressed in dark clothing,” Gonzalez said of the homeowner, whom he did not identify.
“It appears there was some type of gunfire exchanged. The one with the shotgun was able to shoot at the three males and they were all pronounced deceased here at the scene.”
It’s unclear why the suspects targeted the trailer, but investigators believe they were trying to commit a home invasion or burglary.
“We’re going to have a lengthy follow-up investigation out here at the scene,” Gonzalez said. “Having three dead bodies inside a home is not very common.”
Witnesses told deputies a fourth suspect ran off just before the trio entered the home. It’s unclear whether the mobile home was locked or if the three men forced their way inside, Gonzalez said.
One of the residents, identified by a cousin as Yair Gallegos, was shot in the back and leg during the exchange of gunfire, KPRC reports. He was listed in serious condition after having surgery Monday.
“The other three guys are not from here, never seen them in my life,” Cesar Lopez said of the suspects. “Nobody has, so we’re guessing it’s somebody from somewhere else that just tried to break into a home and tried to do a home invasion … The one good thing, I guess I can say, is that he did have a weapon in order to defend himself.”
The case will be presented to a grand jury, but Gonzalez told KHOU the shooting initially appears to be justified.
