Grinches robbed taxi drivers with Christmas Day scheme: cops

A group of grinches spent Christmas Day robbing taxi drivers by hailing a ride and then either distracting the driver or using force to steal their wallets, police said Wednesday.

The band targeted at least four different hacks around Manhattan on the afternoon of Dec. 25, police said.

In the first incident, a 70-year-old driver dropped off two of the suspects in front of 850 Broadway in the East Village around 3:40 p.m. when they tried to pull the victim out of the driver’s seat, police said.

The driver remained in the car but the men managed to snag his wallet, police added.

Nearly two hours later, a 40-year-old cabbie picked up four men in front of East 14th Street and Union Square at around 5:15 p.m. when one of the suspects distracted the driver by picking up a conversation with him, while the other men snagged the victim’s wallet and fled the car, according to police.

Just five minutes later, three of the boys trick another 37-year-old taxi driver who picked them up on the same block –– that time, one of the boys stayed outside the cab and started to chat with the driver through his side window while his buddies grabbed his wallet, police said.

In their final hit of the day, a 47-year-old driver picked up two men around 6:20 p.m. in front of 1 Centre Street –– near NYPD headquarters –– while a third suspect engaged in conversation while the passengers stole his wallet, police said.

No drivers were injured, according to police.
