Where Drew Brees fits in NFL’s complicated broadcast shuffle

ESPN’s Adam Schefter had an odd story about Drew Brees the other day, saying that a “non-ESPN network” has called Brees to be a game analyst.

While singling out that it was not ESPN, Schefter did not reveal which network had placed the call.

There are only three other main choices. CBS, Fox and NBC are the only ones who broadcast NFL games. NFL Network does too, but uses Fox’s announcers for the most part.

CBS, according to sources, did check in on Brees recently, while Fox and NBC have not. It doesn’t really matter, though.

The bottom line is that if Brees decided to retire, then all the networks, including ESPN, would have interest in him. NBC would make the least sense since it only has one game and has shown no indication that it is unsatisfied with Cris Collinsworth.

Fox has Thursdays and Sundays, so there are opportunities for a No. 1 spot to lighten Troy Aikman’s load. ESPN very well could make a change with Booger McFarland, while, you may have heard, CBS has a free agent in Tony Romo.

Romo is likely where the first course of business in the NFL TV offseason will begin, though it could take awhile.

ESPN will be all in on him, while CBS, with home-network advantage, is expected to compete at a high financial level, according to sources.

More than a week ago, The Post reported that the Romo money could get crazy, moving past $10 million per season and he might receive six years. CBS has the right to match any deal ESPN might offer.

Meanwhile, if Brees were to retire, he could be a Plan B for ESPN or CBS. On the same day as Schefter’s Brees report, Saints coach Sean Payton said on ESPN that he believes Brees will play next year. Got it.
