On Wednesday night, news broke that the Netflix crime drama is on indefinite hold and the cast — led by stars Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv — have been released from their contracts.
That doesn’t seem promising for the show’s future. The drama, which is about the nascent days of criminal psychology and profiling at the FBI in the 1970s and 80s, has aired two seasons so far, in 2017 and 2019. Executive produced and directed by David Fincher, it follows agents Holden Ford (Groff) and Bill Tench (McCallany) as they interview serial killers in order to understand their motives.
Netflix maintains that the show is not canceled — rather, Fincher is working on other projects, such as his first film for the streaming network, “Mank,” and the second season of another show, “Love, Death and Robots,” and is open to the possibility of returning.
“He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own,” a spokesperson told Deadline.
In other words, the show is not officially done — but don’t expect Season 3 anytime soon.
Netflix did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
