Cavaliers revolting against John Beilein after 20 games

The losses are piling up and the fingers are starting to be pointed in a familiar direction — the head coach.

With losses in 10 of their last 11 games and four in a row, several anonymous Cavaliers players are blaming John Beilein’s lack of NBA experience and how he’s treating them. Some even are relying more on top assistant J.B. Bickerstaff, according to a story in The Athletic in which Beilein is being painted by his players as someone not making enough adjustments going from college to the NBA.

“Guys drowned out his voice, and when guys start searching for the next in line for help, I believe you’ve lost them,” one Cavs player told the website.

“Our assistants are definitely more prepared for the NBA,” another player said.

The 66-year-old Beilein made the jump after 12 seasons at Michigan and two Final Fours. He hasn’t enjoyed success early on in the NBA, with players saying he’s relying too much on what made him win in college, whether it’s harping on minor fundamentals on extended film sessions. After a 4-5 start, a lot has gone wrong, and the Cavs are now ranked 25th in the NBA in defense, allowing 113.4 points per 100 possessions and have fallen to 5-15.

They aren’t just losing, but getting crushed. Over their last nine games, they have five setbacks of 18 points or more. They lost by 33 to the Pistons on Tuesday. That all led to a long film session in which coaches and players both expressed their displeasure.

“At the same time I think the players are the reasons things are happening the way they are,” one player said. “Coaching can’t fix 20- and 30-point blowouts.”

But it is easy to blame the coach and that’s what a lot of Cavaliers players seem to be doing.
