No love lost between 49ers’ Kyle Shanahan, Packers’ Mike Pettine

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers head coach, and Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine have a somewhat contentious history.

When Pettine — the ex-Jets defensive coordinator — was the Browns head coach in 2014 and ’15, Shanahan was his offensive coordinator in 2014 before resigning after one season. In February 2017, Shanahan told reporters that when he resigned, he presented Pettine with a list of 32 reasons why he wanted out.

“It wasn’t a PowerPoint presentation,’’ Shanahan said at the time. “It was all on paper. I gave a number of points — 32 of them. I gave them to the head coach [Pettine], told him he could do whatever he wanted with those, whether he gave them to the owner or the general manager. I’m sure that he did. I just wanted to be up front about it.”

According to a report by Cleveland.com, Shanahan felt like he was often being second-guessed in his job.

“I had some specific reasons I didn’t think it was going in the right direction, why it wasn’t the best place for me and my family,” Shanahan said of his resignation. “ ‘Pet’ was real cool about it. He understood.”

Listening to Pettine after Shanahan’s resignation seemed to contradict that.

“The bottom line is essentially that Kyle didn’t want to be a part of the organization anymore,” Pettine told reporters in 2015. “You can use the word ‘quit.’ If a guy truly doesn’t want to be a part of the organization, then I wasn’t going to sit and waste a lot of time on it. I didn’t need to go through 32 points or whatever it was.”

Shanahan and Pettine have met head-to-head twice since their split entering Sunday’s NFC title game. Shanahan’s 49ers lost 33-30 to the Packers last season in Green Bay and won 37-8 this season.
