Rob Manfred apologizes for ‘disrespectful’ World Series trophy comment

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred apologized Tuesday after he called the World Series trophy “a piece of metal,” as part of his defense for not stripping the Houston Astros of their 2017 World Series title.

“In an effort to make a rhetorical point I referred to the World Series trophy in a disrespectful way. … It was a mistake to say what I said,” the embattled Manfred told reporters in Arizona, in wake of the sign-stealing scandal aftermath.

The ill-advised comment landed Manfred in trouble with many around baseball, including Dodgers star infielder Justin Turner.

“For him to devalue it the way he did [Sunday] just tells me how out of touch he is with the players in this game,” Turner told reporters on Monday. “At this point the only thing devaluing that trophy is that it says ‘commissioner’ on it.”

Manfred has been under fire for his handling of the Astros’ cheating saga, which he confirmed took place during the ’17 season and parts of 2018, as no players were punished as a result. Players were granted immunity by the league in exchange for providing information on the case.
