Man charged in fatal CTA tunnel shooting
“There’s video evidence footage, it’s quite shocking video,” interim CPD Supt. Charlie Beck said.
A man has been charged in connection with the triple shooting on the CTA Monday that left a man dead and two others wounded.
Torrez Cathery, 23, was arrested in west suburban Oak Park Thursday, two days after a warrant was issued for his arrest, Chicago police said. He was charged with one count of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm.
Cathery was taken into custody by members of the U.S. Marshals and Chicago Police officers, according to interim CPD Supt. Charlie Beck. He has been arrested 22 times on gun, trespassing, battery and drug charges, among others, according to police.
Police initially said the early Monday shooting was sparked by a “personal” dispute. Beck added Thursday that the prior incident involved a knife assault that occurred in October 2019.
Edward Charleston, 24, was with a group of people in the tunnel that connects the CTA’s Red and Blue Lines at Jackson when he recognized Cathery from the October incident, Beck said.
After seeing Cathery, Charleston and the people he was with began to follow him. Soon after, Cathery pulled out a 9 mm handgun and opened fire, killing Charleston and wounding two others.
“There’s video evidence footage, it’s quite shocking video,” Beck said.
The CTA security footage also shows Cathery shooting one of the victims “execution style,” Beck said. Twelve bullet casings were found at the scene.
Charleston, 24, was shot in the stomach and chest and later died. Another man was shot in the head and arm and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was in “grave” condition as of Thursday, Beck said.
A 19-year-old woman was shot in the back and taken to the same hospital, where she was listed in good condition. Police said she doesn’t appear to have been involved in the argument between the men.
Two babies — 6-month-old twins — were in the vicinity of the shooting, Beck said. The children were in the group that included the three victims, but the woman who was shot isn’t their mother, he said.
Cathery is due in bond court Friday.
