A 34-year-old Bronx deli worker shot dead by a lone gunman was remembered Saturday for his generosity and sense of humor.
The victim, Yahya Almuntser, was behind the counter of B&A Gourmet Deli at 217 Brook Ave. in Mott Haven Friday when another man walked in at about 6:30 p.m. and fired several shots at him, police said.
Customer Shanika Davis set out two candles in front of the store Saturday.
“He laughed and joked every time I came in,” she said through tears. “If you needed milk or something or you were short, he’d give it to you. To kill him like that. They didn’t have to do that.”
Almuntser, who leaves behind a wife in Egypt, recently became a US citizen.
Former City Council speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, whose Council office was located down the street from the deli, called the slaying “horrific,” adding, “I am here for solidarity with the community.”
The deli worker was struck several times in the chest, according to police. He was pronounced dead at Lincoln Hospital.
The suspect, wearing a dark coat, fled on foot after the shooting.
