Rutgers opens as comically huge underdogs against Ohio State

Rutgers undoubtedly will get destroyed on Saturday by Ohio State, the top team in the College Football Playoff rankings entering the weekend. But by how much?

The Scarlet Knights opened as 50 1/2 home underdogs to the Buckeyes on Sunday afternoon, according to the Asbury Park Press. That marks the largest spread involving Rutgers over the past 22 years, the largest since it was a 44-point underdog against Miami on Sept. 8, 2001, according to the paper; Rutgers lost that game 61-0.

Rutgers is such a big underdog even with Ohio State star Chase Young facing a suspension for accepting a loan. Fortunately for the Scarlet Knights, they were off this weekend and couldn’t lose.

It has been another brutal football season for Rutgers, which is 2-7 including an 0-6 Big Ten record. Head coach Chris Ash was fired after a 52-0 loss to Michigan dropped the Scarlet Knights to 1-3. Rutgers is looking back to its past by pursuing Greg Schiano as its next head coach, though Schiano reportedly wants the school to upgrade facilities before taking the job.
