Red Sox know how painful Mookie Betts trade is

Red Sox players are just beginning to come to terms with the recent trade that sent star outfielder Mookie Betts to the Dodgers as part of a three-team deal that also included five-time All-Star pitcher David Price.

“Big moves, obviously,” pitcher Nathan Eovaldi told reporters Wednesday. “It’s unfortunate, I guess.”

Eovaldi mentioned how big of a hit Boston’s starting rotation took from losing the left-handed Price. He also referred to Betts as one of the team’s leaders and how having him at the top of the lineup really “set the tone for us.”

“But we have the guys that are going to be able to fill those roles as well,” Eovaldi, 29, said.

When asked about the fans’ disgruntled reaction to the move, Eovaldi understood where people were coming from.

“I assume they’re going to be upset about everything but I mean, it’s hard to see the big picture right now,” he said. “But you got to just stay focused on everything and think about the team that we have and all the young guys we have that are coming up that are going to be able to fill in those roles.”

Outfielder J.D. Martinez expressed his feelings on the trade news with a simple sad face emoji on Twitter shortly after it became public.
