‘Racist-in-chief’: Muslim lawmaker who apologized for anti-Semitic Facebook posts heckles Trump – Washington Examiner

A member of the Virginia House of Delegates interrupted President Trump during his Jamestown ceremony speech in Virginia, shouting at him from the crowd.

Democratic Delegate Ibraheem Samirah, who is Muslim, appeared to have planned the stunt, quickly tweeting out a press release after shouting, “You can’t send us back, Virginia is our home.”

Samirah was quickly booed, as Trump gripped the podium and looked on. The president continued with his speech immediately after without commenting on the interruption.

Samirah tweeted, “I just disrupted the @realDonaldTrump speech in Jamestown because nobody’s racism and bigotry should be excused for the sake of being polite. The man is unfit for office and unfit to partake in a celebration of democracy, representation, and our nation’s history of immigrants.”

In the press release, Samirah notes that his parents are Palestinian refugees, calls Trump “the racist-in-chief,” and said having Trump be invited to the event was “insulting to Virginians and insulting to the history of our Commonwealth’s democracy.”

“We have to remember that his rhetoric translates directly into policy,” the release reads. “He cages kids. He separates families. He bans Muslims. He deprives people the human right of seeking asylum. And it doesn’t end at the border. He is cutting food stamps, taking away healthcare and environmental protections, giving billions of dollars in handouts to the obnoxiously wealthy, and enabling a systematically-racist criminal justice system.”

Samirah, who was voted into office last year, apologized for anti-Semitic posts he made on Facebook while in college. Samirah reportedly said that sending money to Israel is worse than giving money to the Ku Klux Klan and posted that late Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon would burn in hell.

Republican Speaker of the House of Delegates Kirk Cox condemned Samirah’s interruption in a Tuesday afternoon statement.

“I am disappointed by Delegate Ibraheem Samirah’s disrespectful outburst during the President’s remarks. It was not only inconsistent with common decency, it was also a violation of the rules of the House,” he wrote.

Trump was in town to mark the 400th anniversary of the first representative legislative assembly that took place by American colonists on July 30, 1619.
