NBA player Christian Wood ‘upset’ his positive coronavirus test leaked

One of the first NBA players to test positive for the coronavirus was ticked off everyone found out about it — especially since he didn’t even get the chance to tell his mother first.

Detroit Pistons forward Christian Wood has since recovered from the virus, but his coach Dwayne Casey recently told ESPN that Wood was “upset” his name leaked to the media shorty after the team announced on March 14 that an unidentified player (Wood) had tested positive.

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) laws protect the privacy of medical records, so “that’s why we were so mystified when it leaked out,’’ Casey said, referencing the initial report from The Athletic. “Christian was upset his name got out there. He didn’t release it. And the worst part was it got out before Christian even had a chance to tell his mom.

“I was very unhappy about that. I told our staff, ‘This is unprofessional. This can’t happen again.’ It was so unfair to our player.’’

At the time, Wood was just the third NBA player to be diagnosed with the illness. He guarded Utah Jazz star Rudy Gobert — the NBA’s first coronavirus case — just days before the league suspended its season on March 11 due to Gobert testing positive.

As of Sunday evening, there were 10 known coronavirus cases in the NBA. While no teams have released names of those who have contracted the virus, players like Nets superstar Kevin Durant have publicized their illnesses. Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart announced Sunday that he was cleared of the coronavirus after he tested positive for the virus on March 19.
