Mother who co-slept with infant daughter charged in girl’s death

A Pennsylvania mom who was “co-sleeping” with her 2-month-old daughter has been charged in connection with the tot’s death, police said.

Shante R. Plummer, of Steelton, was arraigned Saturday on charges of criminal homicide and endangering the welfare of children after a yearlong investigation into the girl’s death in October 2018, the Patriot-News reports.

The infant, whose name was not released, died at a hospital after medics couldn’t revive her. Plummer had earlier called 911 to report that her daughter was having breathing issues, according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by the newspaper.

Plummer told investigators that she had been caring for the girl and several other children at the home by herself since the baby’s father did not live with her, the affidavit states.

Plummer initially told police that she was awakened by the girl crying while co-sleeping with her daughter, whom she found on the floor next to the bed. She called police and was told how to perform CPR on the child, according to the affidavit.

But Plummer later told paramedics that she woke up to find her daughter unresponsive, leaving out the detail that she was roused by her daughter crying, the affidavit states.

An autopsy found that the girl had six broken ribs, injuries that investigators believe were not caused by CPR. Authorities suspect Plummer — who weighed 280 pounds — rolled onto the baby and lay atop her for “some period of time” after smoking marijuana the night before, WPMT reports.

Plummer’s uneven bed also likely played a role in the girl’s death, as she slept on the left side of the bed, which was 8 inches higher than the right side, the affidavit states.

Plummer, who cops say called the baby’s father and spoke to him for “some time” before calling 911, remains held without bail at Dauphin County Prison. She’s expected to make her initial court appearance Tuesday.
