Mets’ J.D. Davis avoids serious injury with shoulder scare

PORT ST. LUCIE – J.D. Davis is sore, but appears to have avoided the worst from the hard landing on his left shoulder the previous day.

An MRI exam performed Wednesday on the Mets left fielder/third baseman revealed no new damage to his left shoulder, according to general manager Brodie Van Wagenen. But Van Wagenen noted that swelling was found, in addition to a previous labrum injury.

“It didn’t show a ton of inflammation, which is good,” Van Wagenen said at Clover Park. “And it really didn’t show any new structural damage to his shoulder.”

Davis is expected to rest the shoulder into next week and then be re-evaluated.

Davis sustained the injury Tuesday in a diving play at third base. He remained on the ground for a prolonged stretch before walking off the field with the trainer.

“He is going to stay here and he’s a little achy but achy is a good feeling relative to where we could have been,” Van Wagenen said. “We’ll see how that achiness responds and hopefully we get him on a good track.”

Van Wagenen said the previous shoulder injury detected on the MRI appeared to be “an old labrum injury” that was asymptomatic.
