Matthew Stafford out against Bears with broken back bones

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford will be inactive for Sunday’s game against the Bears amid a back injury, according to multiple reports.

Stafford is said to have fractured bones in his back and has been sidelined as “doctors wanted him to have further testing,” per ESPN. An insider also noted the injury could keep Stafford out for “this week or 3 weeks.”

Backup Jeff Driskel is expected to get the start in Detroit. He signed with the Lions in September.

Stafford, who has started 136 consecutive games, has thrown for 2,499 yards this season with 19 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Stafford’s wife Kelly, who had a brain tumor removed in April, showed support for her husband with a post to her Instagram story.

“💔 for this as well. I don’t think there is anything this man hates more than to not be out there battling with his guys,” Kelly Stafford wrote. “These men work so hard all year long. . it’s tough to sideline them. So I’m grateful four our team docs. He has battled through so much, so much more than anyone knows. I’m incredibly proud to be his wife, he’s the toughest SOB. . but I’m happy his body will get a little healing time. But LFG lions fans. . i know I can speak for all of us when I say it’s always nice to beat the bears! Let’s go!”
