A Good Samaritan who thought she was performing an act of charity was murdered early Saturday morning for her kindness.
Police said Jacquelyn Smith and her family were driving through a Baltimore neighborhood when they spotted a young woman carrying what appeared to be an infant while sporting a cardboard sign that read, “Please Help me feed my Baby.”
Smith, 52, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, rolled down the window to give the young mother some money, reported The Baltimore Sun.
Then a man approached the car to seemingly thank the family but instead reached into the car to try to grab Smith’s wallet. The two struggled and the assailant then plunged a knife into the victim’s torso while the woman carrying the sign fled on foot.
“When you see something like this happen to a Good Samaritan it kind of makes you stop and think,” said Baltimore Councilman Robert Stokes on Saturday. “It makes you stop and don’t roll your windows down because those kinds of things make people that really want to help people on the corner saying they got to feed their children not to do it.”
Smith, reportedly a resident of Harford County, Md., was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
“Right now, we’re trying to identify that suspect. He’s described as a man, possibly in his 30s, with a goatee,” said Baltimore Det. Jeremy Silbert. “We also want to identify the woman that was out there asking for money.”
