Jets coach Adam Gase had some words for Sam Darnold after the 22-year-old got a little carried away in his comments after beating the Giants on Sunday.
Darnold mentioned the playoffs remaining a possibility for the 2-7 Jets, which drew some chuckles. Gase reminded Darnold not to look too far ahead.
“I told Sam, let’s just focus on this week,” Gase said Wednesday.
The Jets have not won two games in a row since October of last year, so it is hard to imagine any player looking past the 1-8 Redskins on Sunday, but Gase is making sure no one is feeling overconfident after their 34-27 win over the Giants.
“We have won two games, so we should want that feeling again on Sunday,” Gase said. “The biggest thing that we talk about is just focusing on this week. What happened last week, you have to learn from it, but that doesn’t mean anything for you for the next week. All of your focus has to be on this game coming up. I always look at it as you win the last one, but you lose the next one, nobody cares. No one remembers the last one, so we just need to make sure that we stay focused on the task at hand.”
With TE Chris Herndon (ribs) done for the season, the importance of Ryan Griffin has been underscored again. Griffin has been a huge pickup for the Jets with Herndon limited to just one game this year. The Jets picked up Griffin just before training camp. He has 20 catches for 160 yards and leads the team with three receiving touchdowns.
“We are lucky we have him,” Gase said. “He has been probably our most consistent guy throughout the entire year. His play is not peaks and valleys, he just consistently gets better, he makes plays. When his numbers called, he makes the play.”
Gase confirmed Tom Compton will start at right guard in place of the injured Brian Winters. … RB Le’Veon Bell missed practice because of illness. LB Brandon Copeland (hip/thumb), CB Darryl Roberts (calf), RB Josh Adams (illness), S Matthias Farley (quad) and LB C.J. Mosley (groin) all did not practice.
DE Henry Anderson (shoulder), WR Robby Anderson (back/shoulder), LT Kelvin Beachum (ankle), LB Neville Hewitt (neck/knee), C Ryan Kalil (knee), LG Alex Lewis (elbow), DL Steve McLendon (neck) and WR Demaryius Thomas (knee/hamstring) were all limited. … The Jets signed OL Ben Braden to the practice squad.
