‘It’ star Sophia Lillis says her New York classmates aren’t impressed with her acting career

Brooklyn-born actress Sophia Lillis says her high school classmates aren’t impressed with her TV and movie career.

“It’s not a big deal to them really at all, which is fun,” says Lillis, who’s 18 and in her senior year of high school. “That’s one real good thing about New York — that nobody cares!”

Lillis played the younger versions of Beverly Marsh (Jessica Chastain) in two big-screen adaptations of Stephen King’s “It” and Camille (Amy Adams) in HBO’s moody murder mystery “Sharp Objects.” Her new Netflix series, “I Am Not Okay with This” is, essentially, Stephen King’s “Carrie” meets John Hughes and is set in a small Pennsylvania town (and filmed in Pittsburgh). It’s a coming-of-age dramedy about Sydney (Lillis), a lonely teen girl who discovers that, when she’s angry, she has superpowers — such as willing bullies to have nosebleeds.

“[Coming-of-age stories] are something that I grew up with. I loved watching them,” says Lillis. “And I’m living one as of right now. I am growing up right now, I am in high school and having that normal experience — other than, you know, the whole acting part of it. It’s something that I can really relate to, and I feel like there’s always different ways of growing up.

“There’s no one specific way of growing up, and there’s so much you can really explore with this kind of genre.”

Although the series never specifies that it’s set in the ’80s, it has that era’s distinct aesthetic, including haircuts and letterman jackets and pop-culture references, making it Lillis’ second romp through that decade after “It.”

“I don’t need to do much research on it, because my parents grew up in that time so I can get the information from them and pretty much almost any adult,” she says. “I like being in period pieces — I feel like they’re a lot of fun because you get to kind of live in this different era that you weren’t born in, but [that] everyone else feels very nostalgic [about] when watching.”

An added bonus for Lillis is that Stanley Barber, Sydney’s friend and neighbor on “I Am Not Okay with This,” is played by Wyatt Oleff, who co-starred with her on “It” (as one of Beverly’s friends).

“I didn’t know he was going to audition,” she says. “I got the role first so I was there throughout the whole process of trying to find a Stanley. We were thinking of different actors and I totally forgot about Wyatt. I realized once he was auditioning that he’s so perfect for it. He’s almost exactly like that character and we have such a similar relationship. It was so much fun to work with him. I’m really happy that he got the role.”
