NEW ORLEANS — The best tackles delivered by a 49er on Sunday may have been the massive bear hugs John Lynch gave Kyle Shanahan and Jimmy Garoppolo on the delirious sideline immediately after the 49ers’ 48-46 win.
It was an appropriate gesture. The head coach and quarterback had their most brilliant performances yet, not only outpacing Drew Brees and the Saints in an absurdly loud stadium but overcoming a flimsy effort by the 49ers defense, which gave up as many points, 27, by the middle of the second quarter as it had all season.
“Thank goodness for our offense,” said cornerback Richard Sherman, who gave special praise to Garoppolo. “He played like the best quarterback in football today. He beat a legend.”
