Final College Football Playoff rankings 2019: LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, Oklahoma

There were no surprises in Sunday’s College Football Playoff reveal.

As expected, Big 12 champion Oklahoma landed the final spot and LSU was rewarded with No. 1 for its dominant beatdown of Georgia in the SEC title game. Ohio State landed the second seed and will meet No. 3 Clemson in a blockbuster Fiesta Bowl semifinal on Dec. 28 in Glendale, Ariz. while LSU faces Oklahoma in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta that will be the obvious undercard.

The four teams feature arguably the four best quarterbacks in the country, a foursome that includes likely Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow of LSU, top NFL prospects Justin Fields (Ohio State) and Trevor Lawrence (Clemson), and dual threat Jalen Hurts of Oklahoma. In an ironic twist, Hurts is in the playoff for the fourth time in his career – his first three times came when he was at Alabama – while his former team missed it for the first time since its inception.

Oklahoma, which defeated Baylor in overtime Saturday, is making its third straight appearance in the playoff and fourth overall, though it is still looking for its first victory. LSU will compete in the final four for the first time while Clemson is back for a fifth consecutive season. It met Ohio State in the semifinals in 2016 thrashing the Buckeyes 31-0 at the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz. en route to winning it all. This time, the two undefeated teams seems to be on similar footing, both loaded on each side of the ball and with elite quarterbacks.

The College Football Playoff national title game will take place on Jan. 13 in New Orleans. Over the first five College Football Playoff title games, the top seed has never won the championship. Neither has the No. 3 seed.
