A 21-year-old French tennis player was slammed in the qualifying rounds of the Australian Open after asking a ball girl to peel his banana.
Elliot Benchetrit was halfway through his match against Dmitry Popko on Saturday when the girl offered him the energy-boosting fruit – but rather than peel it himself, he instructed her to do the honors, according to CNN.
The player indicated he was unable to peel the banana because of the bandages on his fingers, but the stunned girl turned to chair umpire John Blom on how to handle the slippery situation.
When Blom told Benchetrit to peel the banana himself, the Frenchman grabbed it and tried to perform the task with his teeth.
Footage of the incident was also shared on Twitter by Alex Theodoridis, the founder of Tennisportalen, the organization that uploaded the video to YouTube.
“So this is the moment where Elliot Benchetrit asks the ballkid to peel his banana,” Theodoridis wrote along with the video. “I’m glad the umpire (John Blom) stepped in and told him off.”
Social media users lobbed criticisms at Benchetrit for his odd request, with one calling him a “nasty piece of work” and another asking, “Who does he think he is?”
Benchetrit, ranked No. 231 in the world, went on to win the match 4-6 6-2 6-3, and will face Japan’s Yuichi Sugita in the first round of the tournament Tuesday.
