Dunkin’ Donuts to sell Beyond Meat sandwich nationally

Fake-meat maker Beyond Meat got a slight boost Monday after Dunkin’ Donuts said it would be rolling out a breakfast sandwich made with the company’s plant-based sausages across the country.

A New York City-based test trial of a breakfast sausage sandwich made with Beyond Meat’s sausages proved so successful the coffee and cruller joint will now offer the sandwich to all 9,000 Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants across the country, the company said Monday.

Shares of Beyond Meat, based in El Segundo, Calif., were lifted to over $112 a share after the news was announced Monday morning before settling closer to $110 a share in afternoon trading, or up less than 1 percent from its previous close of $109.99 a share on Friday.

Beyond Meat, which also makes its products available in the frozen section of Whole Foods and some health food stores, went public in May 2 at $25 with its stock peaking at $234 July amid a race by fast-food companies to add plant-based faux meat options to their menus.

Burger King’s St. Louis-only trial of the Impossible Whopper in April was so successful it made the sandwich available nationwide for a limited time. In June, Tim Hortons began offering several Beyond Meat sausage sandwiches at nearly 4,000 locations in Canada. McDonald’s has been tinkering with vegetarian burgers as well and announced last month it was offering a sandwich dubbed the PLC with Beyond Meat patties.

Dunkin’ Donuts’ 470-calorie sandwich has been available at all Manhattan stores since July 24, where it sells for $4.29 a sandwich.

“I ate it cold and it was still good,” said Elaine Furst, an aspiring Manhattan writer who recently sampled the sandwich at the She Media BlogHer Creators Summit in New York. “It tasted like the real thing. I’d have it again.”
