Caretaker accused of killing 4-year-old in ‘horrific’ case of child abuse

A 4-year-old girl in Philadelphia died after being discovered with bite marks and cigarette burns in what the district attorney described as a ‘horrific’ case of child abuse, officials said on Tuesday.

Police were called to the home of Zya Singleton on Oct. 30 when her caretaker Samilya Brown claimed the child fell out of a second-floor window while playing with a cat, according to Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner.

The city’s medical examiner, however, found that the girl’s injuries were inconsistent with a fall.

Some of the evidence of abuse included bite marks, open wounds, cigarette burns, puncture wounds, and signs of malnourishment, the district attorney said.

She also had “homemade stitches” which led to severe infection. The little girl succumbed to her injuries on Nov. 3.

“This is a horrific, heartbreaking case of abuse, neglect, and murder of an innocent, defenseless child,” Krasner said in a statement.

“All children deserve care, protection, and love — no matter the circumstances of how they come into this world.”

Brown, 38, was charged with murder, endangering the welfare of a child, and other related charges.

Krasner, the district attorney, urged the public to “learn how to spot signs of child abuse.”
