Broadway theaters to be closed longer than expected due to coronavirus

Broadway can’t go on with the shows just yet.

The Great White Way productions were expected to resume during the week of April 13, however, on Wednesday the Broadway League announced that theaters will remain dark through June 7 as the coronavirus pandemic continues to ravage New York City. The decision was made in accordance with Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s directive and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendations on social distancing.

“Our top priority continues to be the health and well-being of Broadway theatergoers and the thousands of people who work in the theatre industry every day, including actors, musicians, stagehands, ushers, and many other dedicated professionals,” says Broadway Leauge President Charlotte St. Martin.

“Broadway will always be at the very heart of the Big Apple, and we join with artists, theatre professionals, and fans in looking forward to the time when we can once again experience live theatre together,” Martin added.

Many productions have been affected by the pandemic. Some shows that have scheduled for the 2019-2020 season are now being pushed back while other shows have simply shut down altogether.

Theatre-goers with tickets to performances until June 7th should receive an email from where they purchased their tickets with information on refund or exchanges. Anyone who has not gotten an email by April 12 should reach out to the place of sale.

No date has been announced for the postponed Tony Awards which were originally scheduled for June 7th.
