For the first time in four years, the Patriots will not represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. For the first time in nine years, Tom Brady will not be playing in the AFC Championship Game.
This year, one drought is guaranteed to end. Either the Kansas City Chiefs will reach the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years or the Tennessee Titans will play on the sport’s biggest stage for the first time since their devastating loss to the Rams two decades ago.
For just the third time since winning Super Bowl IV, the Chiefs have an opportunity to take home the Lamar Hunt Trophy, named after their longtime owner. After falling into a 24-0 hole in the divisional round against the Texans, Kansas City scored 51 of the game’s final 58 points — Patrick Mahomes threw for 321 yards and five touchdowns — and they have home-field advantage in the AFC title game for the second straight season. Last season, Dee Ford’s neutral zone infraction led to a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Patriots.
While the Chiefs were among the favorites to reach the Super Bowl before the season, the Titans have made a stunning run to this point. Following upsets of the Patriots and Ravens — led by Derrick Henry, who became the first running back in NFL history to rush for at least 175 yards in back-to-back playoff games — Tennessee could become just the fifth team in the wild-card era to reach the Super Bowl without playing a home game, joining the Patriots (1985), Steelers (2005), Giants (2007) and Packers (2010).
While second-year Titans coach Mike Vrabel, 44, is playing with house money after winning his first two playoff games, Chiefs coach Andy Reid, 61, enters with a 1-5 record in conference championship games and is running out of time to earn an elusive Super Bowl ring.
