Thursday, December 6, 2018 –
Good evening. We have the potential for a winter storm with snowfall accumulations by Sunday.
A Winter Storm Watch has been issued from 8 PM Saturday through Noon Monday.
The system that will bring the potential for snow is currently located across the southwest. Here is a look at the radar for that part of the country.
That low pressure will move across the southwest into the southern plains through Saturday. Here you can see the spin on this map as the low will be close to Birmingham early Sunday. Cold air wil also be moving in from teh north and northeast..
Precipitation could begin as a wintry mix late Saturday before changing to all snow Sunday morning. We could see all snow Sunday; however, there could be times were we might see a wintry mix for some which would reduce snowfall totals. Take a look at the map for 3 AM Sunday. THe gree is rain, pink is a mix of rain, sleet and snow and blue is all snow.
Here is a look at the Storm Team 11 potential snowfall map through Sunday evening. Cold air will be in place across western North Carolina north into areas of western Virginia. This will allow for some locally heavy snowfall totals. Keep in mind, if we see a mix, snow totals will be less. If it stays all snow, like western North Carolina, there could be snowfall totals in the range of 12 to 15″.
